Biologische activiteit

Beschrijving Silibinin (NSC 651520, Silybin, Silibinin A, Silymarin I, Flavobin), het belangrijkste flavonoïde geëxtraheerd uit de mariadistel Silybum marianum, vertoont hepatoprotectieve eigenschappen bij acute en chronische leverbeschadiging.
In vitro Silibinin (NSC 651520) is een mengsel van twee diastereomeren, silibinine A en silybinine B, in een ongeveer equimolaire verhouding. Zowel in vitro als dieronderzoek suggereert dat deze verbinding hepatoprotectieve (antihepatotoxische) eigenschappen heeft die levercellen beschermen tegen toxinen. Het heeft ook in vitro antikanker effecten aangetoond tegen menselijke prostaatadenocarcinoomcellen, oestrogeenafhankelijke en -onafhankelijke menselijke borstcarcinoomcellen, menselijke ectocervicale carcinoomcellen, menselijke darmkankercellen, en zowel kleine als niet-kleine menselijke longcarcinoomcellen.

Growth-inhibiting effects of gefitinib and/or silibinin in hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HCCs). A: Huh7, Huh-BAT, HepG2, SNU475, and SNU761 HCC cell lines were cultured in medium containing 5% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and treated with gefitinib (A, left), silibinin (A, right) for 72 hr. The resulting cell viability was determined using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.
