Beschrijving Clomifene citrate (NSC 35770, Clomiphene citrate) is een selectieve estrogen receptor modulator, gebruikt bij de behandeling van ovulatie-inductie.

In vitro

Clomifene concurreert met [3H]-QNB en [3H]-nitrendipine om hun binding aan de receptor in de membraanfracties van de urineblaas en het myometrium. Clomifene remt Estrogen/progestogen Receptor in de hypothalamus, waardoor negatieve feedback van oestrogeen op gonadotrofine-afgifte wordt geremd, wat leidt tot opregulatie van de hypothalamische-hypofyse-gonadale as. Clomifene is een mengsel van twee geometrische isomeren, enclomifeen (E-clomifeen) en zuclomifeen (Z-clomifeen). 
In vivo

Clomiphene citrate behandeling verhoogt significant de kans op homoseksualiteit en vervrouwelijkt gedrag bij mannelijke muizen.

(a) Inhibitory activities of IDH1R132H enzyme lead to decreased production of D-2HG in IDH1R132H mutant HT1080 cells after treatment with clomifene for 48 h, and D-2HG was measured by LC/MS method. (b) HT1080 cells were treated for 24 h in the different concentrations of clomifene and then processed for FACS by using Annexin V/propidium iodide staining.
